Shock waves resulting from interaction of laser radiation with transparent solids

Abstract: It is demonstrated that a shock wave can be generated in glass by internal focusing of the radiation emitted by a Q-switched ruby laser. The results are given of a study of the time dependence of the shock-wave velocity and of the influence of focused energy on this velocity.
