Competition between forward and backward stimulated Raman scattering and compression of picosecond pulses

A study is made of the characteristics of the competition between concurrent and opposed processes of transient stimulated Raman scattering. The conditions for mainly backward stimulated Raman scattering are identified. An analysis is made of the factors influencing the scattering asymmetry.
