Influence of insulator films on a metal surface on optical breakdown

B. I. Makshantsev, R. E. Rovinskiĭ, V. E. Rogalin

Abstract: A model is proposed for optical breakdown at a metal surface whereby breakdown is attributed to the onset of a thermal instability in a thin weakly absorbing film of finite dimensions having a high boiling point and being of thickness such that reflection of light from the film–metal system is substantially reduced in this film. Possible experiments to assess the validity of the model are discussed.
