Inversion of lithium-like ions with respect to the 2p state in a recombining plasma

An analysis is made of the requirements for the intensity of the hard pump radiation which arise when attempts are made to achieve a population inversion with respect to the 2p state of a multiply charged lithium-like ion. It is found that these requirements are extremely stringent.
