Resonant generation of even harmonics in metal vapors

Abstract: An investigation was made of the generation of the second and fourth harmonics of laser radiation in magnesium vapor as a result of the forbidden transition 3s² ¹S₀–4S ¹S₀. The efficiency of conversion to the second harmonic was ~ 10^–2 % and the corresponding efficiency for the fourth harmonic was ~10^–8 %.
