Laser simulation of effects of light and plasma on comets and planets

Abstract: An analysis is made of the feasibility of laser simulation of astrophysical effects of ultraviolet radiation bursts and plasma streams on comets and planets. Experiments testing this feasibility are described. A report is given of a study of the characteristic flow-past regimes and formation of a counterstreaming ablation plasma, studied by integrated and time-resolved high-speed photography.
