Abstract: A criterion is proposed for adaptive processing of coherent optical fields scattered by a convex object. The criterion is independent of the shape of the object which is observed via a phase-distorting medium. It is shown that the ratio of two images of a convex object obtained using matched and crossed polarizations represents a distribution with a sharp maximum in the region adjoining a receiver. Maximization of the ratio of two corresponding distorted images obtained in this region by the method of adaptive phase sorting compensates phase distortions and restores the images both in the case when adaptation is carried out before the distorted images are recorded and in the case when this is done after recording. A report is given of an experiment in which images were reconstructed on the basis of the proposed criterion and adaptation was carried out after recording distorted images. The experimental results demonstrate a good qualitative correspondence between the reconstructed and original images.
