Efficiency of laser systems utilizing short radiation pulses

A simple unified description of various laser devices, such as Q-switched oscillators and nanosecond optical pulse amplifiers, is suggested. Simple analytic expressions, utilizing a few convenient parameters, are derived for the maximal efficiency and output energy of devices.
