Optical strength of LiF crystals

Measurements were made of the thresholds for bulk laser damage to γ-irradiated LiF crystals used as passive switches in ruby and neodymium lasers. An investigation was made of the dependence of the damage threshold on the γ radiation dose and on the caustic diameter of the focusing lens. Damage mechanisms are discussed.
