Effect of slow particles in a gas and in an atomic beam

B. Ya. Dubetskiĭ

Abstract: A nonlinear correction to the probability of a transition in atoms interacting resonantly with the field of a standing wave, averaged over the atomic velocities, is shown to have logarithmic divergences responsible for the slow atom effect. This effect and the resultant narrowing of Doppler-free lines of the lamb dip type are found to occur both in a gas and in an atomic beam.
