Abstract:
A method is proposed for the selection and calculation of the parameters of strip optical waveguides with uniform and graded refractive index profiles in the original planar waveguide. Simple analytic expressions are derived for the determination of the increment of the effective refractive index of the original planar waveguide under a dielectric strip as a function of the degree of asymmetry of the strip waveguide and also as a function of the refractive index of the dielectric strip or the width of the strip waveguide for given operating conditions. The results of applications of this method are reported.
