Propagation of optical breakdown in gases on exposure to finite-duration laser pulses

Abstract: An analysis is made of the stage of approach of an optical breakdown wave to a steady state. It is found that, depending on the initial pressure of the unperturbed gas, the limiting regime is established after various time intervals. This is used to explain the nonmonotonic dependence of the finite velocity of a breakdown wave on the initial gas pressure.
