Abstract:
Certain theoretical postulates concerning the formation of outer-sphere complexes have been described. Various approaches to the investigation of these compounds have been considered. Data are presented showing the necessity to take into account the packing term in unitary cratic thermodynamic functions of outer-sphere complexes. Methods for and the results of investigations of various classes of cobalt(III) outer-sphere complexes have been discussed. It is suggested that the formation of transition metal outer-sphere complexes takes place in steps as a result of directional forces. Like inner-sphere interactions, this process takes place in accordance with limiting and characteristic coordination numbers. The types of bonds involved in the formation of outer-sphere complexes have been examined. The bibliography includes 232 references.
