Abstract: The review deals with various methods for the oxidation of cyclo-olefins by molecular oxygen, nitric acid, aqueous solutions of palladium and gold chlorides, and also ozonolysis. The effect of the structure of the olefin, the solvent, and reaction conditions on the mechanism of action of the oxidant have been analysed. The aim of the review is to formulate, by examining the reaction mechanisms, the principal trends in the applied studies on the synthesis of aliphatic oxygen-containing compounds (acids, aldehydes, and alcohols) from cyclo-olefins. It has been shown that the use of ozone fulfills most closely the desired aim.
