Abstract: The fundamental characteristics of the operation of chromatographic columns have been discussed from the standpoints of the general theory of separation; relations applicable in principle to any method of the chromatographic separation of binary mixtures, regardless of the nature and magnitude of the elementary separation step on which it is based, are presented.
