Abstract:
This review presents the results of recent work on the nature of the Raman scattering of light and on the relation between the parameters of the Raman lines and other molecular constants; the problems encountered in applying line intensity data to studies of the interaction of atomic groupings in organic molecules are discussed in detail. Various types of conjugation are considered, including the effect of substituent atoms on π-bond systems (with special reference to the position of the atoms in the Periodic Table), and the possibility of characterising molecular fragments in the presence and in the absence of conjugation. 328 references.
