Abstract:
Data on the infrared spectra of aliphatic nitro-compounds and their salts are discussed and summarised. Relations are established between the position of the nitro-stretching bands in the absorption spectrum and the structure of the radical. A fairly large number of examples are given of the use of infrared spectroscopic data to elucidate the detailed structure of nitro-compounds and their salts, and also to study the behaviour of these compounds in various media. Problems of the assignment of the vibrations in nitro-compounds and in the salts of mononitro- and polynitro-compounds are examined. Possible uses of the infrared relations to identify and analyse nitro-compounds and their derivatives are illustrated. The bibliography contains 237 references.
