Abstract:
This review gives an exhaustive summary of data on unstable intermediate species $\mathrm{RR}'\mathrm{N}$–$\underset{\cdot\cdot}{\ddot{\mathbf N}}$, containing a nitrogen atom with an incomplete electron shell, bonded to another nitrogen atom. These species are analogous to aminocarbenes, and play an important role in the chemistry of organic derivatives of hydrazine. Reactions in which the formation of $\mathrm{N}$-nitrenes has been postulated have been systematised, and reactions involving their subsequent transformation with the separation of nitrogen, isomerisation, or addition to other reagents have been examined. The review covers papers dealing with the chemistry of $\mathrm{N}$-nitrenes, published before mid-1971.
