Abstract: Studies on reactions involving the cleavage of the C–O bond by organomagnesium compounds (OMC) (Grignard and Norman reagents and lotsich complexes), including the behaviour of ethers, open-chain acetals, and cyclic acetals in relation to the OMC, are reviewed. The mechanism of the cleavage of the ether linkage by OMC is discussed, attention being concentrated on the reaction of 1,3-dioxacyclanes with OMC, the complex-formation processes in the reaction of 1,3-dioxolans with Grignard reagents and lotsich complexes, and also the mode of the cleavage of asymmetrically substituted 1,3-dioxacyclanes by these reagents.
