Abstract: The results of studies on the dipole moments and the thermodynamics of the formation of complexes with an intermolecular hydrogen bond are reviewed and the nature of the relation between the energies and lengths of intermolecular hydrogen bonds is examined. The enthalpy–entropy relations for the formation of hydrogen-bonded complexes and the linear correlation between the energy of charge transfer and the hydrogen bond energy are analysed and validated. The theoretical and experimental results of the study of hydrogen-bonded complexes are examined from the standpoint of the donor–acceptor nature of hydrogen bonds.
