Abstract: The review gives a systematic account of the results of studies on the use of Lewis acids as catalysts of the chemical reactions of carbohydrates including polysaccharides. The data concerning the effect of Lewis acids have been grouped, in terms of the types of chemical reactions characteristic of the given class. The scope and certain limitations of their practical applications are indicated.
