The Basicity and Nucleophilicity of Arsenyl Compounds

Abstract: Data are presented on the nature of the As=O bond in compounds of tetracoordinate arsenic. Problems associated with the manifestation of the electron-donating properties of arsenyl compounds, particularly their basicity in various media as well as their proton-accepting capacity in the formation of hydrogen-bonded complexes, are examined. The electron-donating and proton-accepting capacities of compounds of the type RnEO, where E = N, P, As, Sb, S, Se, or Te, are compared. The reactions of arsenyl compounds with a wide variety of electrophiles as well as other reactions involving the arsenyl group are discussed.
