Abstract: The importance of catalysis in polycondensation processes is considered. It is suggested that the catalytic processes in polycondensation reactions be divided into four groups: cationic, anionic, ionic-coordination, and free-radical. Examples of catalysts for a number of reactions are presented and the mechanisms of the catalytic action in various types of catalysis in polycondensation processes are considered. Such types of catalytic reactions are cationic and anionic catalysis and catalysis with the aid of tertiary amines, stereoregular polycondensation and polycondensation in the presence of catalysts of the Friedel–Crafts type, and oxidative polycondensation. The side reactions due to the presence of catalysts and their influence on the properties of the polymers obtained are examined.
