Abstract:
The principal results obtained by using lanthanide shift reagents (LSR) to analyse the micro-structure of polymer chains by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy have been examined. A short theoretical introduction to the LSR method has been given, and the magnetic properties of the lanthanides have been examined from the viewpoint of their possible use as LSR. Particular attention has been paid to the solution of the main problems in the structural analysis of polymer chains: the determination of stereoregularity and the nature of the alternation of the monomer units along a copolymer chain, and the investigation of the distribution of cis- and trans-units and the conformational mobility of homopolymer chains with and without polar groups.
