Kinetics and Mechanism of Electron Transfer in Proteins

J. Kulys

Institute of Biochemistry Academy of Sciences of the Lithuanian SSR, Vilnius

Abstract: The results of studies on the kinetics of the oxidation–reduction reactions of individual proteins (electron transfer agents and enzymes) are described. Attention has been concentrated on the effect of the nature of the active centres in the protein molecules and of the modification of individual aminoacid residues on the rate of electron transfer in a homogeneous medium. Questions associated with the electrochemical reactions of proteins and with the effect of the state of the interface on the rate of this process are considered in detail. Ideas concerning the theoretical calculation of the rate constants for electron transfer in proteins are described.
