Abstract: Published data on the role of defects and the microstructures formed on them in the chemistry of solid oxides have been examined. The conditions of formation, stability, and breakdown of the microstructures obtained on the external surface, at the phase boundaries, and in the inter-crystallite layers in polycrystalline solids have been described. It has been shown that surface compounds have an activating and an inhibiting action on the kinetics of solid-phase chemical reactions and on the thermomechanical and electrophysical properties of oxide materials.
