Abstract: The application of the absorption spectroscopy (IR and UV) of solutions in liquefied elemental gases (N2, O2, Ar, Kr, and Xe)to the study of reactivities and reaction mechanisms is examined. The design of cryostats and the method of preparation of solutions are described and data on the solubilities of molecules in liquefied gases are presented. The characteristic features of the spectra of diatomic and polyatomic molecules in cryosolutions are analysed. The possibilities of the method in the investigation of unstable molecular complexes and in the elucidation of the nature of the spectra of the hydrogen-bonded complexes formed are demonstrated. The specific features of the non-linear absorption of IR radiation by molecules in the cryosolutions are discussed and a number of photochemical reactions in cryosolutions are described. It is shown that the method is promising for the solution of problems of laser chemistry in the condensed phase.
