Abstract: New data on the kinetics and mechanism of reactions involving the inhibition of the radical polymerisation of vinyl monomers obtained during the last 10–15 years are described systematically and discussed. Equations describing the kinetics of the inhibited polymerisation, accompanied by side and secondary reactions such as additional initiation, chain regeneration, secondary inhibition, and inhibitor regeneration reactions are examined and analysed. The principal kinetic features associated with the structure of the monomer and the inhibitor, the type of initiation, and the influence of the medium are noted. Data are presented on the inhibiting activities of the compounds considered and the advantages of the latter relative to known stabilisers are demonstrated.
