Abstract:
Structural (mainly X-ray diffraction) studies of thermotropic liquid-crystalline mesophases have been reviewed. The classification of mesophases has been examined and refined. The discussion deals mainly with the structure of liquid crystals formed by rod-shaped molecules (calamitic mesophases). Mesophases of a new type, containing columnar associates of molecules joined by hydrogen bonds, have also been described. The bibliography contains 141 references.
