Abstract: The present review examines published data on a key problem related to the control over wide limits of the efficiency of separation of the components of complex mixtures in single-column capillary gas chromatography and the selectivity and capacity of the capillary columns. Methods of varying these important parameters of the gas-chromatographic experiment, based on the selection of capillary columns of different types and changes in the conditions of the experiment, have been examined in relation to one another and to their influence on the operational characteristics of the capillary columns and the analysis time. The advantages, disadvantages, and ranges of application of different methods for varying the parameters of efficiency, selectivity, and capacity have been noted, and methods for their further improvement in capillary gas chromatography have been indicated.
