Abstract: The mechanism of the action of additives introduced into oxide catalysts and silver to increase their activity and selectivity in the oxidation of various organic substances has been examined. Additives can change the kinetic parameters of a process (the rate and activation energy of the reaction) and influence the reaction mechanism by their effect on the structure of the surface compounds and on the energy of the bonds which they form with the surface. The modification of the catalysts gives new compounds (both in the bulk and on the surface), leading to the production of new active centres. The action of additives introduced into multicomponent oxide catalytic systems, and various aspects of their modification by acidic and alkaline additives, have been discussed.
