The topology of functional manifolds and the calculus of variations in the large

In this article we consider problems of the calculus of variations in the large on Riemannian manifolds. We give a survey of results on one-dimensional and many-dimensional problems, and we investigate the problem of estimating the number of simple closed geodesics.
