Simple $\mathbb Z_2$-graded Lie algebras

General properties of $\mathbb Z_2$-graded Lie algebras are studied in this paper. A theorem on simplicity is proved. Results concerning the dependence among the structural properties of an algebra $L$ and its components are obtained.
