Discovering the new world of analytical cartography

H. Moellering

Dept. of Geography, Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, U.S.A., 43210

Abstract: In the beginning the origins and roots of Analytical Cartography are considered. Prof. W. R. Tobler has been a leading figure in the initial development of the field. Many concepts like Tobler's Transformations, Deep and Surface Structure, Real and Virtual Maps, and transformations between them are seen as fundamental concepts central to the field. Additional concepts of Nyerges Data Levels, the Sampling Theorem, Digital Spatial Objects, Spatial Frequencies, and Time & Space provide an additional richness to the conceptual base of the field. The discussion concludes with a recognition of several practical applications of the central theory of Analytical Cartography.
