Abstract: A new theory of modeling is presented that is suitable for the evolutionary design of models of complex, open, dynamical, network, and hierarchical systems. The theory is based on the concept of a class hypergraph as a unified model, which was earlier proposed by one of the authors and effectively used in the development of Etalon-CASE-technologies and business solutions. Classes and objects are represented by finite state machines. The theory improves upon the modeling concepts developed in the general systems theory, automata theory, object-oriented design, and the development of the universal modeling language (UML).
