Despite the collapse of the old regime and the construction of the new political system, Steklov guided and supported the Academy of Sciences, establishing its reputation in the new Soviet state. He also laid the foundation for the institutional framework of Russian mathematics, with one of its cornerstones being the Institute of Physics and Mathematics, from which the Steklov Mathematical Institute has emerged.
