$P$-polarized nonlinear surface and bounded (guided) waves in layered structures

D. Mikhalake, V. K. Fedyanin

Abstract: Exact solutions of Maxwell's equations corresponding to $P$-polarized nonlinear surface polaritons and $P$-polarized nonlinear bounded-wave (guided-wave) polaritons in layered structures are found for two cases: 1) a film of a surface-active substance on a substrate whose dielectric properties are described by the tensor $\varepsilon_{11}=\varepsilon_{22}=\varepsilon_{\perp}+\alpha(|E_1|^2+|E_2|^2)$, $\varepsilon_{33}=\varepsilon_{\parallel}$; 2) a film whose dielectric properties are described by a tensor of the same form (an optically uniaxial nonlinear crystal) placed on an optically homogeneous substrate with permittivity $\varepsilon_3$. Analytic expressions are also obtained for the energy flux transported by the surface waves.
