Stability of an interaction against spontaneous production of an average boson field

Concrete examples are used to illustrate how one can investigate the stability of an interaction against the spontaneous production of a nonvanishing vacuum average boson field (scalar or vector). For gauge fields (electrodynamics and the Yang–Mills field) it is shown that the necessary stability is ensured by gauge invarianee.
