Abstract: In order to support activities of a collective that works in the area of information technologies adequate software and organizational means are necessary. Depending on the type and direction of the company corresponding instruments are needed, but almost always we use office packages, local, distributed or external, documents management systems, systems for interaction with clients, and many other items. The authors suggest to actively apply for this purpose systems based of free and open source software (FLOSS).
Office software is the basis of all the activities for every organization and any separate associate. It is important that this software satisfy all common requirements on functionality. At this we often notice that free and open instruments are quite sufficient for that purpose.
Significant part of IT company activities is fulfilled in the network, local or global. Corresponding diverse means are also better represented in the world of FLOSS.
Software control becomes an important element of IT company activities. Full information about license clarity of software, about already installed and inactive software, about periodically and temporary installed software is important. Correct approach is to automize all this activities within the frames of entire organization.
Software virtualization is useful mechanism that allows to significantly economize in hardware, increase security for every functional unit, performed as a separate virtual machine. FLOSS means are sufficient for small and medium-size organizations.
Software storage and organization should be performed in a systemized way; existing FLOSS tools do it all well.
Security and safety for systems and associates, for operative and archive information becomes more important now. It is necessary to install in due time and maintain in actual state all the necessary instrumentation.
We should take into consideration all principal changes in information technologies, and, noting risks and advantages of the new approaches and tools, operatively renew software and educate our associates.
General result is that most wide usage of FLOSS is one of the main principles of surviving and development of a contemporary IT company, institution, or stand-alone IT specialist.
