Abstract:
We outline the history of the method of forming ion beams by interaction with an electron beam. The method of forming this beam and the features of its application are called ‘electron cooling.’ Described is the development of this method from the initial idea presented by its author, the first director of the Institute of Nuclear Physics (INP) in Novosibirsk G.I. Budker, to its implementation and dissemination in accelerator laboratories worldwide.
Keywords:antiproton storage rings, electron cooling (EC), electron guns, resonant optics, collectors, recuperation, solenoids, electron cooling system (ECS), magnets, electron magnetization, proton lifetime, particle temperature.
