Abstract: The progress which has already been made in the construction of a microscopic theory of the nucleus on the basis of quantum chromodynamics, the problems remaining, and the outlook for future progress are analyzed. The problem of nuclear forces, the role played by a high-momentum component in the nuclear wave function, and the role played by relativistic effects in various hard nuclear processes are discussed.
