FROM THE HISTORY OF PHYSICS

The history of the development of the cyclotron over fifty years (1930–1980)

L. M. Nemenov

Abstract: We examine the evolution that the magnetic resonance accelerator, or cyclotron, has undergone in 50 years. In the presentation we note the most essential points of development of these accelerators. We note individual instruments that have made possible further progress in the design of cyclic accelerators. We discuss the requirements imposed on contemporary accelerators.
