Development of a client-server application for navigation dynamic control at open parking

Abstract: Providing drivers with parking places is a complex problem, including planning and managing the parking process near major shopping malls. To solve this problem a certain number of car places are laid during the building construction according to the functional purpose of the building. Existing software concern only the control of underground parking with specific monitoring equipment for the parking lots. The proposed method of dynamic navigation control (i.e. control is depending on the current time) includes providing real-time information on free parking places to the clients, entering the parking space, based on streaming video processing of the video cameras located above the parking space. The advantage of the new method is a possibility to use it for open parking’s large areas, which are generally not equipped with signaling panels, occupancy detectors or access control systems. Method of dynamic navigation control is based on the information-graphic model (IGM) of open parking. The main stages of the method are: creating an information-graphic model of open parking; IGM updating (data relevance is a key feature of the method); IGM visualizing; online interaction and user queries processing in the course of navigation. The developed method of dynamic navigation control was used to create the automated system DyNaM. DyNaM system includes two main modules: the parking places contours editor and the web application for parking places data processing. The DyNaM system testing showed the successful operation of the method of dynamic navigation control. The DyNaM system can be recommended for use in parking areas near major shopping and entertainment malls. The system will decrease congestions, save the car owners’ time to find a free parking place, and fill in the parking area evenly, i.e. to increase traffic and space efficiency.
