Abstract: In solving the 3D electromagnetic problems with the help of the vector finite element method the important issue is how to construct appropriate basis functions. A special basis is used for numerical simulation of the 3D electromagnetic field which enforce tangential continuity of the electric ${\vec{\mathbf{E}}}$ between adjacent elements. Normal component is allowed to be discontinuous. The analysis of different sets of higher order basis functions is presented in the current paper.

Keywords: tetrahedral finite element, vector basis functions, interpolation basis, hierarchical basis, edge-function, face-function, volume function.
