Abstract: A model kinetic equation for a rarefied diatomic gas is used to obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of divergence-form conservation laws. For some types of force fields, new divergence forms of conservation laws are constructed. They are used to examine the general properties of the motion of a finite gas mass in a given field.

Key words: rarefied gas, model kinetic equation, diatomic gas, divergence conservation laws.
