Variational formulation of diffraction problems

Abstract: New variational formulations of problem of diffraction of electromagnetic waves by inhomogeneous structures are obtained, which reduce any problem of diffraction in an unbounded domain to the solution of a problem of diffraction in a bounded domain with non-local boundary conditions. The variational formulations obtained can be used in discretization by means of the method of finite elements or finite differences.
