Abstract: Within the framework of the triple deck theory, three-dimensional packets of Tollmien–Schlichting waves generated by acoustic disturbances induced near a boundary layer at transonic free-stream velocities are studied. It is shown that, due to a superposition of the most unstable skew waves, a packet takes a typical horseshoe shape with two disturbance peaks propagating at an angle to the incoming stream.
