Abstract: The propagation of perturbations in a stratified inviscid fluid filling the lower half-space is studied. A plane wave traveling on the free surface of the fluid is chosen as an exciting source. An explicit analytical solution to the problem is constructed, the existence and uniqueness theorems are proved, and the long-time wave pattern in the fluid is investigated.

Key words: stratified fluid, flow function, internal waves, surface waves.
