Abstract: An overview is presented of considerable advances made in a direction initiated by A. A. Dorodnicyn in the mid-1960s, which was found fruitful in the development of fundamentally new efficient methods for fluid dynamics problems. Most of the results described were obtained by the authors.

Key words: incompressible fluid, Navier–Stokes equations, Stokes and Stokes-type systems, Dirichlet boundary and initial–boundary problems, iterative methods, splitting of boundary conditions, numerical implementations, spherical Couette flows.
