A brief overview of the fundamental theorems of the calculus of variations will be given, along with applications to the existence of various types of trajectories in classical mechanics systems.
This course is available to students in years 2-5: familiarity with differential geometry and classical mechanics is required.
Syllabus
- Local theory of the calculus of variations.
- Variational principles of classical mechanics.
- Periodic trajectories of the Birkhoff billiard table. Discrete Lagrangian systems.
- Existence theorems of the calculus of variations.
- Minimal invariant measures. Elements of the Aubry-Mather theory.
- Applications to problems of the existence of periodic, asymptotic, and chaotic trajectories in classical mechanics.
